ROCKFORD, IL - Originally opened in 1991, Aldeen Golf Club, 1902 Reid Farm Road, Rockford, has long been recognized as one of the Midwest’s top public golf experiences, attracting golfers from throughout the region with its championship layout, immaculate conditions, and nationally respected design.

Aldeen Golf Club is now also the only golf course in the region to have the Better Billy Bunker system, a state-of-the-art bunker drainage and performance solution designed to improve post-rain playability, consistency, and lower long-term maintenance needs.

The $2 million bunker renovation was 100% donor funded, thanks to generous donations from The Norris and Margaret Aldeen Foundation for Rockford and Rick and Lana Engen.

Overview of the Aldeen Golf Club Bunker Renovation Project:

  • Better Billy Bunker System: Eliminates the need for traditional fabric liners. Dramatically reduces maintenance costs, prevents sand washouts, and provides superior drainage. Bunker remains playable even in poor weather conditions.

  • Bunker Footprint Reduction: 77 reshaped bunkers to improve strategy, aesthetics, and course conditions. Total bunker footage was reduced from 91,000 square feet to roughly 70,000 square feet.

  • PGA Tour-Style White Sand: All reconstructed hazards were filled with fresh, premium white sand that makes bunker contours highly visible for players

  • Fairway Reshaping: Select fairways were adjusted and subtly contoured to match the newly designed hazard layouts

Construction started in August 2025 and was completed in April 2025.

“These improvements not only elevate the golfer experience, but they also strengthen Aldeen Golf Club as a regional destination that helps drive tourism and economic activity throughout the Rockford region. We are deeply grateful to the donors who believed in this vision and made this major investment in our community possible,” said Chris French, PGA Head Golf Professional at Aldeen Golf Club.
